Came in to the office at 7.30 today. Didn’t sleep well as I had about 2 hours of sleep only. Checked all the items are prepared for today’s program. As each of the participants came, we check their temperature with the new device that we got a few weeks back. Everyone was okay without any signs of fever. No worries of getting affected with H1N1. Well, not everything was ok. My desktop was infected with virus. A trojan, Perfect Defender 2009 which is a rogue antispyware program self installed on my computer hard drive. There was a popup that mention something like this…

Security Center Alert
To help protect your computer, Windows Firewall has blocked activity of harmful software.
Do you want to block this suspicious software?
Name: Spyware.ISpynow
Risk Level: High
Description: iSpynow is a Spyware program that records keystrokes and takes screen shots of the computer, stealing personal financial information.

There is a “Enable Protection” button on the bottom right hand corner of the popup. Do not click to enable it because that will open up a site asking you to download Perfect Defender 2009. Of course I didn’t know that and I thought it was from the Windows Firewall alert. After install, it will ask to perform a scan on your computer. I run the scan and it shows me 5 threats. I search on my hard drive for the said executables but none to be found. Feeling something was wrong, I Googled for Perfect Defender and found out that it is not what it seems to be. Perfect Defender 2009 may drastically slow the performance of your computer. So it is best that you remove it quickly.

Here is my solution which I found from the internet and that was working for me.
1. Download MalwareBytes Anti-malware (MBAM) Link 1 or MalwareBytes Anti-malware (MAM) Link 2. Close all programs and Windows on your computer.
2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Follow all instruction and just use the default setting.
3. It will download and install the latest version if there is an update.
4. Run the application, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan. It may take some time to complete the scanning.
5. When the scan is complete, click OK. Check everything that is shown in the result and click Remove Selected.
6. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.

Optional step which I did to ensure that there isn’t any more problem with it.
Go to Windows Explorer and navigate to C:/Documents And Settings/Username/Application Data/Google/. You should remove this folder as well. That’s about it. Good luck.
